theUNPACKING

The first step in assembling was to unpack the parts. This resulted in more packing material than could fit into a dumpster

theASSEMBLY (thePLAN)

Assembly consisted of 4 phases: 1) preparing the chassis for assembling, 2) adding CPUs and memory to the mother boards, 3) assembling the chassis, and 4) installing chassis and ethernet swiches to the racks..

theASSEMBLY (theREALITY)

Assembly of theHIVE, rather than being a well honed industrial assembly line, was closer to a gathering. Builders came when they were able and stayed as long as they had time.

theSETUP

The racks had not arrived by the time all 64 PCs were finished. So they were stacked into 7 leaning towers of PCs. This allowed us to start installing the software (i.e. LINUX).

theRACK

Once the racks had arrived and there was room to set them up, the racks had to be stripped down and rebuild. Again seldom does anything go as was planned.

Through theWINDOW

Now that theHIVE is finished, take a look inside.
